In fact, the game doesn’t ease up on the leash until at least an hour into the game, when you get 10 gold blocks and can start playing in Lego World’s randomized worlds. The structured sense of the game works rather well, despite its open ended nature. Tutorials abound, complete with videos, to show you what you can do with the myriad of tools the game dishes out. Unlike Minecraft or most games like it, LEGO Worlds holds your hand for a while, as you get your feet wet with the game. Oh, the game also puts you in a third-person view by default too, instead of Minecraft’s first-person view. In fact, don’t even think of LEGO Worlds as an open world game (despite it being one), think of it as a Lego version of Minecraft (with simplistic quests). But I'm sort of excited about LEGO Worlds because, full disclosure: In the past, I've fired up the Wii to engage in some Lego Pirates of the Caribbean after my son had gone to bed.There have been a few open world LEGO games in the past (the amazing LEGO Marvel comes to mind) but none with the scope of LEGO Worlds. I'd rather get my eyeballs shaved than sit through an hour of Minecraft. Given Lego's dedication to keeping play safe for kids, those features will likely be a huge undertaking. The current version of the game does not yet have multi-player support, allow for sharing your creations with friends, or give players the ability to drop in on someone else's creation. Perhaps every set of future LEGOs will also have an in-game digital equivalent. Think of it as getting a digital download when you buy a physical album.Ĭurrently there's a limited selection of physical sets that kids can bring into the game, but the selection promises to fill out over time. One thing LEGO Worlds has vs Minecraft is the ability to build real life play sets within the game. Of course, LEGO Worlds isn't a substitute for bringing home a box of colorful plastic bricks from the toy store, but at least you can't step on them.
